A little less humbling each time

Since it warmed up to 27° today here in Madison, Wisconsin, I decided to get out for a short run. It’s been really challenging for me to acclimate to running in the cold temperatures. I’ve buckled down and have leveraged my tools. Great coaching, a solid training plan, excellent gear, and motivating friends to run with have all been very helpful!

Finally I’m getting the hang of it. Just like in my professional life, when I push myself to keep doing new, different and more challenging things, it gets easier over time. It’s nice to be building this muscle memory now to take my own personal improvement to a deeper level.

So far this winter my longest run has been 4 1/2 hours in 22°F weather. I decided I have reached my threshold this year and have since retreated to the indoors. Getting out today for a few quick miles was fun and refreshing! I also felt like I looked like a runner today.

Of course for full disclosure, right after snapping this photo I slipped and fell on my bum! Oops! All good but humbled again!

I’ve spent a lot of time on my runs thinking about project work and software releases. This transformation I’m doing to myself has complexities and newness just as organizations face. For several years I’ve been helping organizations advance their people and projects. While I have lived those challenges every single day with each organization and project team, I’m gaining a much deeper awareness to the impacts of my recent personal change. I will be able to lend more out of these new learnings.

I’d love to hear what you’re doing. What are you working towards conquering these days personally or professionally? How are you choosing to be persistent?
